Bespoke School Trips to

Berlin & Krakow

A Berlin and Krakow school trip connects the place where the Holocaust was planned with the place where it was carried out. It is a connection students rarely make from a textbook.

In Krakow your students walk Kazimierz and Podgórze, where Jewish life was concentrated and then destroyed, and follow the story through Schindler's Factory Museum and the Galicia Jewish Museum. Auschwitz-Birkenau is a guided visit covering both Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau. In Berlin the same history is told from the other end, at the Topography of Terror in the former Gestapo cellars and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

The Cold War sits alongside it in Berlin, at the DDR Museum, the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie, so a group covering both topics gets them in one trip. It works for GCSE and A level history and politics groups.

This is a demanding trip to organise, with two cities and a transfer between them. Thirty years of running these means the timings and the site bookings are handled for you. Tell us your dates and year group and we will build the trip around them.

FAQs for

Berlin & Krakow: WWII History & Politics

What will students learn from visiting Krakow and Auschwitz?

This trip gives students a profound and respectful understanding of a number of key history and religious education topics, including:

  • Holocaust and World War II history.
  • Jewish persecution

Through guided visits to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Jewish Quarter, and Schindler’s Factory, students can explore the impact of Nazi occupation, Jewish persecution, and the resilience of Krakow’s community. It is a powerful experience that supports GCSE and A-Level history, RS, and citizenship studies.

What is included in the Auschwitz visit?

Your group will take part in a full-day guided tour of Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau with an official local guide. The visit includes headsets to ensure all students can hear the commentary clearly. The tour provides historical context while maintaining a respectful tone throughout.

Is the Auschwitz visit suitable for all students?

The Auschwitz-Birkenau visit is deeply moving and may be challenging for some students. We recommend it for Key Stage 4 and above, though individual schools can decide based on their students’ maturity and emotional readiness. Teachers will receive guidance and resources to help prepare students before and after the visit.

Can we meet a Holocaust survivor during the trip?

Where possible, we arrange for groups to meet a Holocaust survivor or a relative at the Galicia Jewish Museum. Availability varies, so this is confirmed at the time of booking.

What support materials are provided in Krakow?

All Krakow school trips include free access to our “Project Krakow” teacher and student resources. These pre- and post-visit materials help students reflect on what they’ve learned and make strong curriculum links to their studies.

We can also support you in answering questions your SLT may have related to the trip. Take a look at our SLT resources now.

Are meals included every day in Krakow?

Yes. All Adaptable Travel tours are half board as standard, meaning breakfast and a two-course evening meal are included each day. Lunches are not included, allowing flexibility for your group to eat locally or take packed lunches arranged through your hotel.

What safety measures are in place for visiting Krakow?

Every element of your trip is fully risk-assessed through our TourTrust system. You’ll receive comprehensive safety documentation covering accommodation risk assessments and 24-hour emergency support throughout your stay.

We can also offer support with documentation that your SLT may need to help sign the trip off internally.

How do the Berlin public transport passes work?

We provide 24-hour BVG small group tickets for the number of days you are travelling. This is the most cost-efficient ticket for a school group. Each ticket is valid for up to 5 people for 24 hours from time of validation and for any number of shared rides in tariff zone A, B and C. Berlin C zone. Zone A is the most central and Zone C is the greater Berlin area, including the city of Potsdam, Sachsenhausen Memorial and the airport. Tickets can be validated on the platform before your first ride.

The BVG (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe) network includes S-Bahn (urban rail), U-Bahn (underground), buses, trams and even BVG ferry services across the Spree. BVG tickets are valid on these modes of public transport, as well as other regional transport options, although not on long-distance intercity trains (IC, EC or ICE).

Are school groups exempt from city/tourist tax in Berlin?

Yes, school trips are exempt from city tax in Berlin, provided the group leader completes the city tax exemption form before arrival. Our operations team will email this form in advance of the trip and can forward the completed version to the accommodation ahead of arrival.

What is your minimum group size?

Our minium group size for all educational tours is a least 20 paying passengers.
