Ypres & Somme: WW1 Battlefields School Trips
Bespoke School Trips to
Battlefields - Ypres & Somme
A Ypres and Somme battlefields school trip takes your group to Tyne Cot, Thiepval and the Menin Gate, and to the ground the fighting happened on. The scale is hard to grasp from a classroom.
The point of the trip is scale. Tyne Cot is the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world, and Thiepval carries the names of more than 72,000 men with no known grave. Your students see the ground itself too, at preserved craters and trench lines across the Ypres Salient. At Newfoundland Memorial Park the shape of the battlefield is still there in the grass.
Evenings and museums do the rest. The Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate is held every evening, and the Passchendaele Museum and the Somme 1916 Museum give the fighting its context. Many groups bring their English department along and work war poetry into the trip.
Every group gets Project Battlefields, our free student and teacher resources, and a wreath for your laying at the Menin Gate. Book ten months or more ahead and there is £10 off every place, and every group gets free Belgian chocolates at Chocolats de Groote. A battlefield guide can also search family and local regiment records. Tell us your dates and we will build the trip around them.
Suggested Itinerary
Our tours are of great educational value and tie within the standard requirements of the National curriculum. Students can develop their understanding of the events leading up to and during WWI by visiting the many battlefield sites, memorials and cemeteries in the Somme and Ypres areas.
Travel and the Ypres Salient
Travel to Ypres.
You will depart school by executive coach with a Channel crossing to Calais by Eurotunnel or ferry, continuing to Ypres.
The Ypres battlefield sites.
On arrival you will visit a series of battlefield sites including Hill 60, the Caterpillar Mine, Hooge Crater and Essex Farm Cemetery, before checking in to your accommodation for an evening meal. You may then choose to attend the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate.
A day on the Somme
The Somme battlefields.
After breakfast you will collect packed lunches and travel to the Somme to visit the Sunken Lane and Hawthorn Mine, Newfoundland Memorial Park, the Thiepval Memorial and the Somme 1916 Museum. There is also the option to swap the Sunken Lane and Hawthorn Mine for Vimy Ridge on the way.
Return to Ypres.
You will return to Ypres for your evening meal, with an optional ten-pin bowling evening.
Remembrance and the journey home
Cemeteries and Passchendaele.
After breakfast you will collect packed lunches and check out, then visit two significant cemeteries, Langemark German Cemetery and the Tyne Cot Commonwealth Cemetery, followed by the excellent Passchendaele Museum.
Lijssenthoek and home.
If there is scope for a later Channel crossing you may also visit Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, before making your return journey home.
Adaptable Travel can arrange an alternative WWI Battlefield program to, or in replace of those listed above. If you wish to alter the above suggested programme of events listed above, please let us know.
If you have chosen to include a Battlefield guide, they can help with family & local regiment history searches. They can rework the itinerary to add sites which relate to a school’s specific region in the UK or can research and locate a relative’s grave.
Please contact us for more information and let Adaptable Travel tailor make your next school Battlefields trip.
