Lille French MFL School Trips
Bespoke School Trips to
Lille
A Lille school trip gives your French group language immersion in a working French city, where the market, the bakeries and the waffle stalls all give them something to order.
Halles de Wazemmes is one of France's largest markets, with regional produce and plenty for your students to buy in French. The Waffle Museum at La Gaufre du Pays Flamand covers the history of Flemish waffles and finishes with a tasting. A guided walking tour of the old town and its squares can be given in French or English. Bellewaerde theme park is there for a full day if you want one.
A treasure hunt around the city can be added, and it gets students reading French signage without noticing. You set how much of it runs in French. Lille suits Key Stage 3 groups and is often a department's first trip abroad with a class.
Your tour is ABTA bonded and every supplier is TourTrust audited. Thirty years of running French trips means we know which visits hold a Year 8 group's attention. Tell us your dates and year group and we will build the trip around them.
Suggested Itinerary
Travel to Lille
Cross to France and a walking tour.
You will depart school for Lille, with students advised to bring a packed lunch for the journey. After your outbound ferry crossing from Dover to Dunkirk you will continue to your accommodation in Lille and check in, followed by a two-course evening meal. In the evening you will join a two-hour guided walking tour, in French or English, discovering Lille's charming streets, historic squares and architecture. You can move this tour to the next morning depending on your journey time, with the option to add a treasure hunt at a supplement.
Markets and waffles
Halles de Wazemmes Market.
After breakfast, with use of your own coach throughout the day, you will visit Halles de Wazemmes Market, one of France's largest and liveliest markets and a great place to practise French while browsing fresh regional products. Market days are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. Lunch is at your own arrangement, perhaps a fresh baguette from the food stalls to enjoy in the nearby Parc Jean-Baptiste Lebas, a ten-minute walk away.
The Waffle Museum and bowling.
In the afternoon you will travel by coach to the Waffle Museum and Tasting, La Gaufre du Pays Flamand, to learn the history of Flemish waffles, see how they are made and enjoy a tasting session. After a two-course evening meal you will round off the day with two games at Lille Metro Bowling.
Bellewaerde Theme Park
A day at Bellewaerde.
After breakfast your coach will depart for a full day at Bellewaerde Theme Park, with a mix of thrilling rides, animal exhibits and shows. You will return for a two-course evening meal at your accommodation or a local restaurant in Lille.
The journey home
Cross back to the UK.
After breakfast and check out you will load the coach and depart Lille for Dunkirk, with the option of adding a Second World War stop on the way. You can pick up packed lunch items en route, then take your channel crossing from Dunkirk to Dover before returning to school.

FAQs for
Lille French MFL School Trips
Lille is a working French city rather than a tourist town, and it is close enough to the UK to keep travel time down. Halles de Wazemmes is one of France's largest markets and gives students plenty to buy in French. The Waffle Museum at La Gaufre du Pays Flamand covers the history of Flemish waffles and finishes with a tasting, and a guided walking tour of the old town can be given in French or English. Bellewaerde theme park is there for a full day, and a treasure hunt around the city gets students reading French signage without noticing. It often works as a department's first trip abroad with a class.
Language immersion means your students use the language in ordinary situations rather than only in lessons. Guides can work in the target language, in English, or switch between the two, and the same applies to walking tours, so you set the level. Market visits, tapas tours and food halls put students in front of people they need to order from, and the included E3 language trail sends them out in small groups to work through tasks around the city. You decide how much of the trip runs in the target language, and it can be increased as the group grows in confidence.
Yes. Structured lessons in a classroom setting can be built in alongside the visits, taught by teachers used to working with UK school groups. The number of lessons is entirely up to you, and some groups include none at all, preferring the language to come through the visits themselves. Lessons work well on longer trips and with groups who want a measurable outcome from the week. Tell us what you have in mind when you enquire and we will build the balance you want.
The E3 language trail is a self-guided booklet of tasks that sends your students out around the city in small groups. They read signage, ask questions and complete activities in the target language without a teacher translating for them, which builds confidence quickly. It is included at no extra cost on the trips that feature it, and works alongside the guided visits rather than replacing them.
Every trip is built around your group rather than sold as a fixed package. A typical MFL trip covers return travel, accommodation on a half board basis, transport and transfers, entrance to the visits you choose, and guides where they are needed. The itinerary shown on this page is a suggestion, so visits can be swapped, added or dropped, and structured language lessons can be included if you want them. Travel insurance is available as an optional supplement rather than being built into the price.
The autumn and spring terms work well. September and October give comfortable weather for the market and walking tours, and the city is quieter for a group than in the summer. From January to March there is better accommodation availability and lower prices, with the market and museum visits unaffected by the weather since they are largely indoors. Bellewaerde is seasonal and closed over the winter, so check the dates if you want it in the itinerary.
The main consideration on a language trip is the self-guided element. Where students work through the E3 trail or buy their own lunch in a market, they do so in small groups with clear meeting points, timings and staff positioned nearby, rather than being left to their own devices. Guides are used at the visits that call for one. Every supplier we use is audited through TourTrust, our own safety management system, and you receive a risk assessment handbook and supplier safety information in one pack, along with a 24 hour support line while your group is away.
Senior leadership will usually want the curriculum rationale, the safety arrangements and the financial protection. Every supplier is audited through TourTrust and you receive a risk assessment handbook and supplier safety information in one pack, so most of what gets asked is already documented. Adaptable Travel is an ABTA member, membership number Y1241, flight-inclusive trips are ATOL protected, and we have been arranging educational trips since 1994. On a language trip it also helps to set out how much of the itinerary runs in the target language, which we can put in writing for you.
