FAQs for
Bay of Naples Geography Study Trips
The Bay of Naples covers volcanic hazards and plate tectonics at Mount Vesuvius, with Pompeii and Herculaneum showing the human impact of a single eruption in unusual detail. On the coast, Sorrento works as a case study in a tourism-dependent economy, and a day on Capri adds island tourism and coastal landforms. Underground Naples brings in the relationship between a city and the geology beneath it. Topics can be weighted towards physical or human geography, and the trip suits GCSE, A level and FE groups.
Very few destinations put an active volcano, two excavated Roman cities and a tourism-dependent coastline within reach of the same base. Students can look at the hazard and its consequences on the same day, which is difficult to achieve anywhere else. Sorrento gives a resort economy your group can observe simply by walking around it, and the density of case studies means a shorter trip still covers a lot of ground.
Every trip is built around your group rather than sold as a fixed package. A typical Bay of Naples trip covers return flights, accommodation on a half board basis, coach transport and transfers, entrance to the visits you choose, and guides where they are needed. The itinerary shown on this page is a suggestion, so you can add visits, drop them, extend the trip or shift the balance between physical and human topics. Travel insurance is available as an optional supplement rather than being built into the price.
Every group that books the Bay of Naples receives Project Sorrento, our free student and teacher resource pack. It is written to the curriculum, so your students arrive with some grounding in what they are about to see and you have material to work with when you get back. It is included at no extra cost.
The autumn and spring terms usually work best. Temperatures are manageable for a full day on Vesuvius and at Pompeii, where there is very little shade, and the sites are considerably quieter than in the summer months. Groups travelling in September or October, or between January and March, also tend to find a wider choice of accommodation and better availability at the guided visits. High summer is possible but the heat and visitor numbers make for a harder day at the archaeological sites.
Groups are usually based in or near Sorrento, which keeps the main visits within reach. We work with a range of group-friendly hotels rather than a single fixed property, so the options we put forward depend on your dates, group size and budget. Accommodation is half board as standard, with multi-bedded rooms for students and separate rooms for staff. Availability in the region changes from season to season, so we confirm the specific options with you at quote stage rather than listing them in advance.
Vesuvius is an active volcano and a managed visitor site, with monitoring and access controls in place. The practical considerations for a group are terrain and heat: the ground underfoot is loose volcanic material, and there is little shade at Vesuvius or Pompeii, so sturdy footwear, sun protection and water matter. Every supplier we use is audited through TourTrust, our own safety management system, and you receive a risk assessment handbook and supplier safety information in one pack, along with a 24 hour support line while your group is away.
Senior leadership will usually want to see the curriculum rationale, the safety arrangements and the financial protection. On the safety side, every supplier is audited through TourTrust and you receive a risk assessment handbook and supplier safety information in one pack, so most of what gets asked is already documented. Adaptable Travel is an ABTA member, membership number Y1241, and flight-inclusive trips are ATOL protected. We have been arranging educational trips since 1994. If there is something specific your school needs, ask and we will provide it.
