Bespoke School Trips to

Amsterdam

A Netherlands geography study trip gives A level and FE students some of Europe's most innovative approaches to water management, flood risk and urban change.

With large areas of the country at or below sea level, the Netherlands is a strong setting for examining the relationship between people, water and the environment. About 26% of the country lies below sea level. Students can compare traditional and modern approaches to water management, from the historic windmills and polders of Kinderdijk to the Keringhuis Flood Centre and Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier.

In Amsterdam, IJburg is a case study in land reclamation and innovative urban development. Rotterdam lets students explore urban regeneration and sustainable city development, and a Rotterdam harbour cruise brings in international trade, industry and the role of one of Europe's largest ports. An Amsterdam canal cruise offers another perspective on how water has shaped the growth and character of the Dutch capital.

At A level, BTEC and undergraduate level there is room to go further, with more independent study time and greater emphasis on whichever strand your specification calls for. The trip brings the processes, management strategies and contemporary issues studied in the classroom into the landscape they come from.

Everything is ABTA bonded and TourTrust audited, and the risk assessment handbook arrives with the supplier safety information in one pack. Send us your dates and group size and we will get an itinerary back to you.

Suggested Itinerary

Below is a suggested itinerary to give you an idea of how the trip can run. Every trip is built around your group, so the visits, the order and the length can all change to suit your specification.

Travel to the Netherlands

Depart the UK and cross the Channel.

You will depart the UK by coach and cross the Channel, continuing to your accommodation in the Amsterdam area to check in for an evening meal.

Amsterdam: water management and urban geography

IJburg and an Amsterdam canal cruise.

After breakfast you will explore IJburg, one of Amsterdam's newest districts, built on reclaimed land, where students can investigate innovative urban planning and floating communities. You will continue with an Amsterdam canal cruise before independent time to explore the city, returning to your accommodation for an evening meal.

Rotterdam: regeneration and sustainability

A harbour cruise and Rotterdam's regeneration projects.

You will travel to Rotterdam, around an hour away, for a harbour cruise taking in international trade, industry and the workings of one of Europe's largest ports. The rest of the day covers the city's regeneration and sustainability projects, which can include the Cube Houses, the Markthal, Benthemplein Water Square, the DakAkker Rooftop Farm or the Floating Farm. You will then return to your accommodation for an evening meal.

Dutch water management

Kinderdijk and the Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier.

You will travel to Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to see how traditional windmills and polders protected the Netherlands from flooding for centuries. You will continue to the Keringhuis Flood Centre and Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier, where students can explore one of the world's largest movable flood defence systems and how the Netherlands continues to adapt to rising sea levels, giving a direct comparison between traditional and modern approaches. You will then return to your accommodation for an evening meal.

We can tailor make an itinerary around the needs of your group. Get in touch today to start planning your next geography study trip to the Netherlands.

FAQs for

Netherlands Geography Study Trips

Which geography topics can be studied on a Netherlands school trip?

Water management runs through the whole trip. Your students can investigate land reclamation and building on reclaimed land at IJburg in Amsterdam, river flood management at Noordwaard through the Room for a River programme, and hard and soft engineering along the Zuid Holland coast. Around that sit sustainability, adaptation to climate change, urban planning and the relationship between people and a landscape that has been engineered for centuries. Around 26% of the Netherlands lies below sea level, so flood risk is a live national issue rather than a textbook example.

What makes the Netherlands a good destination for a geography school trip?

Nowhere else offers water management on this scale in a country your students can cross in a day. Around 26% of the Netherlands lies below sea level, and the schemes protecting it are visible, documented and open to visitors. The Room for a River approach at Noordwaard is a genuinely different answer to flood risk, giving the river space rather than building the dykes higher, which gives students something to compare against the hard engineering they will have studied. It is also close to the UK, which keeps travel time down.

What is included in a Netherlands school trip?

Every trip is built around your group rather than sold as a fixed package. A typical Netherlands trip covers return travel from your school, accommodation on a half board basis, transport throughout, entrance to the visits you choose, and guides where they are needed. The itinerary shown on this page is a suggestion. You can add visits, drop them, extend the trip or weight it towards river management, coastal defence or urban topics. Travel insurance is available as an optional supplement rather than being built into the price.

When is the best time of year for a Netherlands school trip?

The autumn and spring terms usually work best. September and October give reasonable daylight for time spent outdoors at Noordwaard and on the coast, and the sites are quieter than in summer. From January to March there is more choice of accommodation and better availability on guided visits, and higher river and sea levels through the winter months make the flood defences easier for students to appreciate in action. Summer is possible but Amsterdam in particular is at its busiest.

What accommodation do groups stay in on a Netherlands school trip?

Groups are usually based within reach of Amsterdam, which keeps travel time to the main visits manageable. We work with a range of group-friendly properties rather than a single fixed hotel or hostel, so what we put forward depends on your dates, group size and budget. Accommodation is half board as standard, with multi-bedded rooms for students and separate rooms for staff. Availability in and around Amsterdam changes considerably through the year, so we confirm the specific options with you at quote stage rather than listing them in advance.

Is a Netherlands trip suitable for both GCSE and A level groups?

Yes. The trip suits GCSE groups meeting flood risk and coastal management for the first time, and A level groups who need to compare engineering approaches in more depth. The guided visits can be pitched to the age of the group, and the balance between river management, coastal defence and urban topics can be shifted to match your specification. Tell us the year group and exam board when you enquire and we will build the itinerary accordingly.

How is safety managed on a Netherlands school trip?

The main considerations are water and weather. Visits take place alongside rivers, dykes and coastal defences, so groups stay with their guide and keep to designated routes and viewing areas. Conditions on the coast and at Noordwaard can be exposed, particularly through the winter months, so weatherproof clothing and sturdy footwear matter. Amsterdam brings the usual city considerations, including heavy cycle traffic, which catches groups out more often than road traffic does. Every supplier we use is audited through TourTrust, our own safety management system, and you receive a risk assessment handbook and supplier safety information in one pack, along with a 24 hour support line while your group is away.

What information will senior leadership need before approving a Netherlands trip?

Senior leadership will usually want the curriculum rationale, the safety arrangements and the financial protection. Every supplier is audited through TourTrust and you receive a risk assessment handbook and supplier safety information in one pack, so most of what gets asked is already documented. Adaptable Travel is an ABTA member, membership number Y1241, and we have been arranging educational trips since 1994. If your school needs something specific for its approval process, ask and we will provide it.
