Waterloopbos

A rewilded hydraulics laboratory where the models are still standing in the trees

For four decades this forest was a working laboratory. Dutch engineers built scale models of harbours, coastlines and flood defences from around the world here, then tested them with real running water. Designs for some of the country's most important water works were shaped on this site before they were ever built.

The concrete models are still there, half reclaimed by the forest that has grown up around them. Students walk marked routes between them and pick up the story of Dutch water engineering from the structures themselves, in a nature reserve now alive with dragonflies, amphibians and birds.

It works as a single visit covering both engineering and ecology, which is unusual, and it suits groups looking at how design decisions get tested before they reach the landscape.

Group visits for more than 20 students need permission arranged in advance.
