Room for the River: the bold Dutch idea of letting the land flood on purpose

The Netherlands is famous for holding water back. At the Noordwaard, the Dutch did the opposite. They lowered the dikes, gave farmland back to the river, and let it flood by design. It is one of the boldest ideas in modern flood management, and this museum sits right in the middle of the landscape it created.

Inside, hands-on displays tell the story of the Biesbosch wetland and the Room for the River works. Outside, the landscape is the exhibit: creeks, reed beds, and a rewilded wetland that beavers and kingfishers now call home. 

You can also add the whisper boat tour. It is a quiet, electric boat that glides out into the flooded creeks with almost no sound, allowing students to see the floodplain from the water.
