Keringhuis Flood Centre & Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier
One of the largest movable flood defences in the world, and the visitor centre that explains it
The Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier is the final piece of the Delta Works, the system of barriers protecting the Netherlands from flooding. Two enormous gates stand ready to close off the New Waterway the moment a storm tide threatens. Each gate is almost as long as the Eiffel Tower is tall, and several times its weight.
The Keringhuis Flood Centre sits alongside it as the public water centre for the site. Its exhibitions explain how the barrier works, why it was built, and the wider story of Dutch water safety, from the 1953 flood that prompted the Delta Works to the question the country is still answering: how do you keep protecting a low-lying nation as sea levels rise?
Outside, students can watch ships passing through the waterway the barrier guards. A guided tour can be added, lasting around an hour and a half, giving your group a closer look at how the barrier operates and how climate adaptation is planned decades ahead.
