The story of the dam that reshaped a country

The Afsluitdijk is a 32 kilometre dam that turned a wild, salty inland sea into a calm freshwater lake, protecting the land behind it from flooding and changing the map of the country for good.

This is the visitor centre that tells you how, and why, and what it means now.

Inside, interactive displays walk students through the engineering, the history, and the harder question the Netherlands is still working on: how do you keep protecting a country as the seas keep rising? It is flood defence, climate adaptation, and future-proofing, all made real.

The setting does half the work. The centre looks out over the Waddenzee, a UNESCO World Heritage tidal landscape, so students step from the exhibits straight out to the water the whole story is about.
