Sicily is an excellent destination to consider for your next geography school trip and ideal for the study of volcanology, plate tectonics, natural hazards, agricultural activity and tourism and sustainability. Sicily and its surrounding islands are home to many active and dormant volcanoes, the most active is of course the infamous Mount Etna which has only recently erupted.
Mount Etna’s formation is associated with the subduction of the African plate under the Eurasion plate and a journey up it’s something that will allow students to learn more about this complex stratovolcano, its eruption history and associated landforms.
Mount Etna has exerted not only a strong influence on the landscape but also on the people living near it, which offers great opportunities for case studies on managing natural hazards. With its rich fertile soil, beautiful sandy beaches and Mediterranean climate, the islands main industries are agriculture and tourism, which also offers great human geography case study options.
If you are looking for some exciting geography mixed with a Mediterranean climate then Sicily is the place for your group.
