Step into a Dutch fishing village from before the sea was tamed

Take the museum ferry across the IJsselmeer and your students arrive in another century. The Zuiderzeemuseum is a living, open-air village of more than 140 authentic buildings, gathered from around the shores of the former Zuiderzee. Costumed locals go about their day, craftspeople work at their trades, and students walk straight into the history.

Here, students see what that world was, and get a real feel for what change on this scale actually costs the people living through it.

The museum also runs curriculum-linked education programmes led by its own museum teachers, with clear ties to geography, history, citizenship and social studies.
