The Museum of the City New York was founded in 1923 and is an art gallery and history museum. It is located at the northern end of the Museum Mile section of Fifth Avenue Manhattan, facing central park. It is a private non-profit organisation which receives government support as a member of New York City’s Cultural Institutions Group. The collection includes paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, costumes, decorative objects, furniture, toys, rare books and manuscripts. There is also a marine and military collection, police and fire collection and a theatre collection. The rarest item which the museum houses is a chair belonging to Sarah Rapelje, said to be the first born child in New York State of European parentage.
