Zion National Park is located in south-western Utah on the Western Edge of the Colorado Plateau. Zion which actually means “place of refuge” was the first National Park in Utah and is part of the geologic area called the Grand Staircase. Both the East Fork and North Fork of the Virgin River run through Zion National Park and have eroded the Navajo sandstone to form gorges, canyons and imposing rock formations. On a visit to the park students can learn how the processes of sedimentation, lithification, uplift and erosion have all contributed to creating this breath-taking landscape
