Housed in a striking historic building within the ARTIS grounds, the Aquarium tanks showcase wildly different underwater worlds, from a coral reef teeming to a cross-section of an Amsterdam canal, seen from below the waterline as no one usually gets to see it.

Students see how different aquatic habitats work and why they matter, and the famous canal display opens up a genuine conversation about water quality, city ecosystems and what lives in the water running through a modern European capital.

The Aquarium sits within ARTIS in Amsterdam's leafy Plantage district, alongside Micropia, the Groote Museum and the botanical garden, so it pairs naturally with a wider day in the area.
