Icelandic names follow a unique tradition — instead of using family surnames, your last name is based on your father’s or mother’s first name.
This naming system is called patronymic (from your father) or matronymic (from your mother).
So, if your father is called Jón and you're a girl, your surname would be Jónsdóttir — literally, "daughter of Jón". If you're a boy, you'd be Jónsson — "son of Jón".

Did you know?
In Iceland, people don’t inherit family surnames. Instead, each generation gets a new last name based on their parent’s first name.
There are no shared family surnames, and people are listed alphabetically by first name in phone books, schools, and even government records. It's all about individuality!
