Wawel Cathedral

Wawel Cathedral

Wawel Cathedral, also known as the Royal Archcathedral Basilica of Saints Stanislaus and Wenceslaus, stands on Wawel Hill overlooking Old Town Krakow. The cathedral has a rich 1000-year old history and remains one of Poland’s most important national sanctuary.

Wawel Cathedral was the church of Kings for 400 years and during this time all important state ceremonies such as weddings, baptisms and funerals of Polish royalty were celebrated at the High Alter.

Not only does the cathedral provide daily worship facilities, is also has a treasury which hosts one of the most valuable art collections in Poland, archives, library and finally a museum. Another major attraction the cathedral boasts is the Sigismund Tower which holds the famous Sigismund Bell. The bell is one-third heavier and 250 years old than Big Ben in London and is only tolled on solemn state and church occasions including the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005, who actually gave his first ever mass in Wawel Cathedral.

Students will be able to gain a greater understanding of Catholic Christianity whilst exploring the Cathedral, the Royal Tomb, Bell Towers and the Museum. An audio-guided tour is available to enhance your groups overall understanding of the beliefs, teaching and practices of the faith.
