Syracuse has been awarded the title of World Heritage Site. Situated on a plateau surrounded by canyons formed over thousands of years by two rivers, the Anapo and Calcinara. Through a picturesque landscape, you can admire the impressive necropolis of more than 5,000 tombs, man-made caves carved into the rock. The term Pantalica, of Greek origin, means caves or cavities, and that of Pantalica is the largest cemetery and is the site of the most important prehistoric inhabitants of the Mediterranean basin, built by the people who settled in Sicily before the Greeks.
