Mount Etna

Mount Etna

This excursion will take you on a journey of discovery and a rare opportunity for students to close to an active volcano. You will be led by a specialist guide, who will discuss the volcanic processes and landforms of this famous Stratovolcano. The guide will talk students through the formation of Etna, with an overview of the Aci-Castello and Aci-Trezza bays. Students will then travel to almost 2000 meters above sea level to view craters both remnant and recently formed, all within the back drop of break taking Ionian coastline. Students also have the opportunity to explore lava–flow caverns that formed during past eruptions. Next on the tour is a visit to the Serra Del Salifizio (The Scorpion Ridge) for a magnificent view of the ex Valle Del Bove (The Ox Valley), which is a massive Caldera that formed with the collapse of ancient craters.

Please note, this tour takes you to just below 2000m in altitude. To go higher up Mount Etna and see the volcano crater itself this requires a cable car and 4x4 jeep journey.  This is an additional cost, please enquire for information. Please note this additional activity is booked and paid directly by yourselves, so please note we are unable to provide risk assessments for this activity as we do not contract this supplier and you undertake this at your own risk.
