Fingerprints to be used as currency in Japan

Japan is one of the world leaders in science and technology and it has become an increasingly popular destination for school trips in relation to this growing subject area.  It’s not surprising then that Japan will be the first country to trial a new payment system in which visitors can use their fingerprints as currency!

The trial system will be launched this coming summer and will be aimed specifically at tourists.  The plan is that visitors to Japan can register their details including fingerprints and their credit card details, then once registered they can then check into hotels and buy items in certain shops using only their fingerprint. Participating shops and hotels will be decked out with a small fingerprint-reading device, which will match the visitors fingerprint to the registered database.  For hotels in Japan, it is a legal requirement that the hotel checks the guest’s passport, however, the new system hopes to do away with this, so guests can just scan their fingerprints instead.

In the first phase, the system will be launched in several popular tourists spots, including Hakone and Kamakura, with 300 souvenir shops, restaurants and hotels being involved in the scheme.  It is then hoped, if successful the new system will be launched on a bigger scale ready for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is expected that fingerprint technology will be mainstream in Tokyo by 2020.

The system will not only benefit the visitor, but the govern...
