Santa Clara Tower

Santa Clara Tower

Preserved by the South Bay Historical Railroad Society (SBHRS), the Santa Clara Railroad depot was built in 1863 and was home to one of the first computers installed in Silicon Valley. Housed in a shed, it is a mechanical computer allowing you to recreate simple computer programming…although with different consequences – pull out a slide which contains an “if, then, else” statement, along the lines of “if this slide is out, open this track, else train crashes”!  This was in use from 1927, and today you can see it in action on request.
