Altamira Caves

The amazing Altamira Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  This status was given for the presence of some amazing drawings and polychrome rock paintings of wild mammals and human hands, drawn by Palaeolithic man, along these 300m long cave systems.

The rock paintings were created around 11,000 – 19,000 years ago, but only discovered 1880, yet it took until 1902 for experts to accept prehistoric man had the artistic and mental capacity to draw such pictures.

Guided tours are available, and is the perfect addition to a visit to nearby medieval village of Santillana del Mar, around 30km from Santander.
