In an auction this week, the Head of a Muse drawing by Raphael sold for a staggering £29.2m, setting a new world record as the highest price paid for any work on paper. The sale also saw this become Raphael’s most expensive piece of work.
At the same Christie’s auction, the Rembrandt painting, entitled Portrait of a Man, Half-Length, With His Arms Akimbo, sold for £20.2m, also a record price for the artist at auction. The auction house said it was the highest total for an auction of Old Masters.
The work Danseuse au repos, a pastel by Edgar Degas previously held the record as the most expensive piece on paper, selling in New York in November last year for over $37m.
