This walking tour explores the the historical centre of Krakow’s Jewish life

Located across the Vistula River from Wawel Catsle, Podgorze initially a quiet neighbourhood was transformed into a Jewish ghetto during World War II. From 1941 until 1943, an estimated 60,000 Jews were packed into an area of 20 hectares until March 1943 when the ghetto was liquidated resulting in thousands of the ghetto residents either being shot or sent off to nearby concentration camps. Now redeveloped and restored to its former self, Podgorze is home to the memorial monument for the murdered Jews of the Podgorze ghetto located at Plac Bothaterow Getta.

This Nazi German concentration camp was built in Plaszow, a southern suburb of Kraków (now part of Podgórze district), soon after the German invasion of Poland. The Plaszow camp, originally intended as a forced labour camp, was constructed on the grounds of two former Jewish cemeteries in the summer of 1942 during Nazi German occupation of Poland. In 1943 the camp was extended and subsequently became a concentration camp with deportations of the Jews from the Kraków Ghetto beginning October, 1942.

Located in the heart of Kazimierz, Kraków’s Jewish quarter. One of Poland’s most visited Jewish museums and cultural centres.

Kazimierz is a district of Krakow that housed a sprawling Jewish Community for over 500 years. During World War II, the once bustling Jewish quarter was left abandoned as the German War Administration forced all Krakow Jews to resettle in the newly created ghetto north of the Kazimierz area. Since the 1990’s it has been rediscovered and its expunged Jewish culture gradually reintroduced. Famous for its associations with Schindler and Spielberg, the Jewish Quarter is now a monument to a vanished community with its Synagogue and Museum. Alternative, edgy and packed with oddities this is an essential point of interest to any visitor.
