Russia transforms Black Sea resort for Winter Olympics

25/08/2010
A brand new winter community is being constructed in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in Russia's North Caucasus mountains, ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Along with a large scale wintersports arena, more than 300 kilometres of roads, 100km of rail, 39 tunnels and 24 thermal and hydro power stations are also to be built.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, the boss of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, says that the plans are 'well on track,' and that the Russian construction site is now 'probably competing in terms of size with London's.'

Organisers are also busy discussing ways of overcoming any raising of global temperatures, which could potentially leaving Sochi facing some of the problems that hit the Winter Games in Vancouver in February this year, when alpine events were delayed and visitors had their tickets cancelled due to warm weather.

To tackle such possibilities, Sochi organisers are planning to use an artificial snow system called "hot snow" to ensure ideal conditions are guaranteed.

There have been reports of government ministers saying that overall games investment is close to 950bn roubles (£20 billion). Russian billionaires are also investing in the region - entrepreneur Telman Ismailov is ploughing £520 million into Sochi, building two luxury hotels with 4,000 rooms.
