Museum reopens in London following local donations

02/09/2010
A museum containing a collection of 10,000 local historical and cultural artefacts has been saved from imminent permanent closure thanks to large cash donations from two local residents.

Wandsworth Museum, which is situated in the former West Hill library building in West Hill, south London, has been closed for three years after funding to run it was cut by councillors in February 2007 in a bid to slash government costs.

But, such was the strength of feeling from one pair of local residents, Michael and Dorothy Hintze, that they pledged £2 million to refurbish and modernise the museum and get it reopened for member of the public to enjoy once more.

The museum contains a learning centre, a cafe and a dedicated research area for access to the museum library and archives.

London Mayor Boris Johnson and Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt attended its official reopening and it will open to the public tomorrow, Friday 3 September.

Mr Johnson said, “Not only is the new Wandsworth Museum a fabulous resource for the local community, it is a wonderful addition to London's cultural landscape.”
