![]() London's triumphant bid to host the 2012 Olympics has already turned the city into a hive of excitement and now, with just two years to go until the opening ceremony, that excitement has reached fever pitch.
Sir Craig Reedie, the former British Olympic Association chairman, says that London in 2012 will be a 'magical' place to be, so now is the perfect time to arrange your holiday or school trip to London. Reedie, who played a large part when London's bid to host the 2012 Games were drawn up, said, “London is beginning to understand how this place will be magical," he said. ''The place is coming alive. Lord Coe, the London 2012 chairman, and London Mayor Boris Johnson launched the countdown to the Games earlier this week. Reedie was knighted after London's successful bid and in October last year became the first Briton to be elected on to the IOC's executive board for nearly 50 years. The regeneration of London that comes alongside the city hosting the Games is a 'real gift,' says Reddie, who is looking forward to seeing the benefits East London will enjoy as a result. “It became quite clear that with the creation of the Greater London Authority and the election of Ken Livingstone that we were going east," he said, explaining the decision on the Games' location. "£7.2 billion is the cost of the Games and 75 per cent of that is regeneration. What a gift to the City that is,” he added.
