![]() A futuristic walkway is set to be built across the north shore of the River Thames, which will link some of the most famous tourist attractions in London.
The floating boardwalk will offer a continuous pedestrian walkway along the river's northern bank, connecting Tower Bridge and St Paul's Cathedral. It will border a landscaped river garden which will stretch from Blackfriars Bridge to the popular tourist hub at the Tower of London. The floating walkway, which has been designed by architects Gensler, is hoped to be completed in time for the 2012 Olympic Games. Although funding has not yet been secured for the walkway - which would also boast five pavilions showcasing London's innovation, events, leisure, green energy and education - it has already scooped an award at the Mayor's London Planning Awards. Architects Gensler said, "The walkway will enable pedestrians to experience a totally new relationship with the river and the city." Although it is expected that the project will meet opposition from campaigners as it is to be built on a World Heritage site, as the structure will be 'floated' into place, it could be installed and removed without damaging its precious surroundings.
