![]() The world famous Empire State Building in New York has become the largest commercial building in the city to be powered entirely by renewable energy sources.
The landmark building has announced that it is buying 100 per cent wind power from the Green Mountain Energy Company in order to power the structure. President of Malkin Holdings, Anthony E. Malkin, landlords at the Empire State Building, said, "It was a natural fit for us to combine 100 per cent clean energy with our nearly completed, ground breaking energy efficiency retrofit work. "Our program of innovation at the Empire State Building shows simple, replicable, non-proprietary steps for other landlords to follow to be more energy efficient, cleaner and greener,”"he added. The wind power will ensure that the building will avoid producing almost £100 million of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually – the same amount that could be saved if almost every house in New York State was to turn off every single light in their homes for a week. As well as the building going metaphorically green, it is also going literally green. The Empire State Building is currently lit in green and white lights at night in order to show support for the New York Jets football team, who are playing a major NFL game against the New England Patriots this weekend.
