Coronation Street theme park in the pipeline

06/09/2010
The set of Coronation Street is to be transformed into a theme-park style tourist attraction.

In line with budget cuts, ITV is planning to move the set to a new, cheaper site and turn the old set into an attraction for fans of the soap.

The show is currently filmed on Quay Street, in Manchester City Centre, close to the Granada TV studios. The new site may possibly be a disused dock in Salford Quays, two miles from the current base, which would be an exact replica of the current set.

Visitors to the attraction will be able to walk down the famous cobbled street, shop at Rita's Kabin, have a drink in the Rovers Return and be filmed in their very own Corrie scene.

A show source said, “There is a lot there which people would like to visit. Coronation Street bosses think it would be a hugely popular attraction and a fitting tribute to the old set.”

A Street spokesman said, “We are currently discussing a number of options.”
