Michael Palin Calls For More Geography School Trips
13/07/2012
School pupils need to go on more geography school trips – according to Michael Palin.

Thanks to the seemingly unstoppable rise of technology, children and students around the world have been given a portal through which they can see and learn about the earth and its geography in a whole new way. However, is this readily available information really enough to encourage students to take an interest in our ever-changing environment and landscapes?

Not according to Michael Palin. The former comedian turned writer and broadcaster believes that in order for children to truly engage and be excited by the natural world in which we live, they must first be given the opportunity to experience it first-hand on geography school trips.  Speaking ahead of a scheduled speech on geography at the Princes Teaching Institute, he stressed the importance of the subject and the need for children to go on geography field trips to fire their imagination.

Palin, an avid traveller who is famed for his many travel documentaries and companion books, believes that there should be a renewed emphasis placed on the traditional school trips which were once commonplace in UK schools and believes that without them, students are at risk of "losing the ability to make up their own minds about the rest of the world".

"You have to show them a mountain, show them a power station, show them a nuclear site," he added.

The recent fall in geography school trips has been attributed by many to the open access students now have to computers and the internet meaning that sights and wonders that were once only accessible by visiting them and experiencing their beauty directly, can now be found quite easily online.  Mr Palin added that his love of the subject began at an early age, thanks to "two very good teachers" and because of the opportunities to "get out of the school building", something which is happening less and less in schools today.
