A rarely seen painting by Barcelona’s most famous artist Pablo Picasso has been sold for almost £13.5m at Christie's auction house in London, exceeding all prior expectations. “Jean fille endormie”a portrait of the Spanish’s artist’s lover Marie-Therese Walter fetched £13.5m when it went under the hammer on Tuesday at Christie's Impressionist and Modern Art auction in London.

Given to the University of Sydney last year by an anonymous US donor, the rarely-seen piece was estimated to raise between £9 million and £12 million but sold to an anonymous British buyer for £13,481,250. The proceeds raised by the sale of the little-known Picasso masterpiece are to fund medical research into obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
